Embers // Afterlife Fantasy

Welcome to the first day of your new life. Embers is an afterlife fantasy cyberpunk RPG, running since 2006, first under the name War Chain, and then under the name Tamashii no Chikai, originally as a Bleach RP. Some Bleach influence still remains, but it is all presented differently and features new elements. The recent 2016 reboot under the name Embers follows a very similar standard and focus that War Chain and Tamashii no Chikai did, and we hope Embers will grow into its own free of its fandom ties. Here's to 157,000 more posts!
Mature themes, half the board is gay. Not recommended for bigots or individuals under 16 years of age. You must be 18 or older to gain access to the mature boards.

Huli / Calypso

Unusually for a Diablo, Calypso is passive and deferential with no fighting spirit to speak of, preferring to concede rather than push. A follower rather than leader, she has a habit of latching onto anyone who can provide her with guidance and security. Unfortunately for her, Calypso possesses a soft heart that is far too kind, which does her no favours in the dog eat dog world of Sheol. Hope springs eternal within her, and she is always willing to give second (or third, or fourth, or fifth, or…) chances to those who have hurt her in the past. Most would’ve learned to at least somewhat harden their heart by now, but Calypso is still naïve and innocent like she’d never been hurt. Every betrayal, every new slight comes as a shock to her and hurts as much as the last. It’s almost like she can’t comprehend the concept of deception. This, plus her somewhat dependent nature, makes it depressingly easy to take advantage of her. Calypso holds no grudges, and she is always willing to believe the best of people even if they had proved to be otherwise time and time again.

It’s not just an extreme case of rose-coloured glasses. Calypso is… not all there. For as long as anyone can remember, she hasn’t spoken a single word. Her throat works fine, and she vocalizes a fair bit, chirps and trills reminiscent of songbirds, but it’s more of a hint to her current mood and nothing that resembles an actual language. Occasionally, she does make sounds that resemble words, but it would be in the voice of whoever was talking to her down to the pitch and inflection, like a parrot capable of perfect mimicry. It can be somewhat unnerving. She mimics other sounds too, the shuffle of feet and the rustle of sand and the whisper of cloth, and words often seem to fade into the background noise of the world without her attaching any special significance to them. In her more lucid states she does understand Ancient Greek and Latin, but other times it seems like she can’t grasp the concept of language altogether. It’s a toss-up which state she’d be in at any given moment. Even when she cannot comprehend language, however, she does seem to understand tone and body language, so it’s not impossible to communicate with her.

In her less lucid states, Calypso seems to regress to a younger age or more animalistic mindset, driven by instinct and not logic. Her memory is also a fickle thing, and she does suffer bouts of anterograde amnesia. Thankfully, her instincts lean less towards causing mayhem and more towards seeking pleasure, and she is more likely to stare at shiny baubles or crawl onto someone’s lap for cuddles and kisses than she is to cause meaningless destruction. Thankfully, because despite her personality, Calypso is very strong, probably one of the strongest Diablo in existence if only by virtue of her age, and she is capable of dealing vast amounts of damage were she so inclined. This is no secret; the leash she keeps on her Force ranges from minimal to nonexistent, even on her lucid days, and weaker Seekers and Diablo find it difficult to exist around her. Even in her less lucid states, Calypso is not likely to fight back against an aggressor; however, she is more likely to deal unintended damage if someone frightens her as she is even more unaware of her own strength than she usually is.

Nowadays, she gives off the impression of a skittish doe, shy and ephemeral and wary of all those who approach her. Or perhaps wary is not the right term to use; she doesn’t really… do wariness, or suspicion, or anything of the like. It is more of a frightened deference that can transform into flighty terror at any hint of aggression. Any action of hers that can be construed as suspicion is usually fear, instead. She may not know how to pick out lies, but she does know how to be frightened. However, this doesn’t tend to last long if you prove yourself friendly. Calypso is quick to trust, especially if those she already trusts are friendly towards you. While not quite loud or vivacious, she is still an extroverted people person and prefers the company of others to being left alone. Actually, she gets quite anxious when she’s left alone. Fortunately, the company she requires is fairly low-maintenance. As long as she can sense the Force of someone she trusts within her general vicinity, Calypso is mollified. Sometimes, they don’t even need to acknowledge her directly; she just needs them there.

Friends
Those who are so inclined probably find it easy to be friendly with her. Actually being her friend, however… her instability and issues with communication make it rather difficult to parse her, and most probably don’t bother putting in the effort. I expect most of her friendships to be superficial at best, especially with her memory coming and going as it is. Why bother making friends with someone who might not even remember you the next day? Another thing is, while she is kind and gentle and will deliberately go out of her way to help someone, she is not loyal. She will be kind to both you and your enemy alike, and if you get mad at her for it she’ll find it difficult to understand why you’re mad, especially if she is in a state where she cannot comprehend language. It doesn’t make any of her kindness less genuine, just understand that there are no strings attached to any of her favours. Which isn’t to say that it’s impossible to gain her loyalty; just, it takes time.

If Kassander doesn’t like you, like, actually dislikes you instead of just being his usual grumpy self, she’ll probably try to avoid you, too.

Enemies
Why would you want to fight her. Shame on you.

On a more serious note, half the time Calypso can't even conceptualize hate. I suppose some of Kassander's enemies might bleed over to her, but it will be a very one-sided rivalry. Her memory comes and goes, and she might not even remember you.

Lovers
In her more lucid moments, Calypso can conceptualize love, but unfortunately those moments are few and far between. She is bisexual with a very slight preference for girls, and I don't think she even knows what monogamy is. I would prefer her romantic relationships to evolve out of pre-established friendships; it's hard enough being her friend, with the state she's in. Being a lover is almost out of the question.

Sheol / Little Light

The days all blend together here, not that she knew of any other place. Sometimes it felt like she should, scattered visages of what might be memories, what might be half-fantastical daydreams of another world. Maybe it was both. It was hard, sometimes, to tell what was real and what wasn’t, what was her and what wasn’t, what was past and present and future and real or unreal and what thoughts were hers, if she could even think, if time existed or if reality was a knotted line that kept twisting back on itself over and over and over again in an endless loop. Was she thinking this? Could she even think? Maybe it was someone else doing the thinking, someone else using her brain.

Not that it distressed her. Not that she thought it in as many words, fleeting images and emotions that flitted through her brain on the gossamer wings of a dragonfly. It didn’t matter. Didn’t matter, didn’t matter, nothing mattered, some things mattered, mattered to her, mattered to no one, mattered to only her and no one or no one else. Wait. Were those the same? What were the same? Calypso paused, handful of sand falling through her fingers onto another pile. She was building a mountain. No, a dune. No, many mountains. One. Two. Three. Four. Seven? Two. Four. Eight. She frowned and tilted her head, green eyes skating over the small piles of sand she had made. Piles. Piles. Many. Small steps so that she could climb up, up so she can touch the clouds and peer at the brightest thing up there, see what it was to touch solid light. Up. Down. She didn’t need them. She could step by herself. But you needed stairs to climb. But she could fly. But didn’t you need wings to fly? Calypso didn’t have wings. Or maybe she did. Or maybe…

She was doing something. Was she? Yes. She was looking right at it. Right at them. Them? Her. They weren’t alive, were they? No, if they were she would know. Cautiously, Calypso skated her fingers over one of the piles of sand, watching as the errant particles bounced off the edges of the small dunes. The wind picked up, blew more of the piles away, not enough to scatter them but enough to pick up the topmost pieces of sand and scatter them in the air. Calypso scrambled back, making a soft, surprised noise as she fell down from her previous knelt position. One arm raised to shield her face, other hand rubbing the tears away from where sand had blown into her eyes. She should be used to this by now. She was used to this by now. This world was the only one she knew.

The wind would die down soon. Maybe she should stand up. Maybe she should climb and climb and climb until she poked through the sky. Was there an end to it? She didn’t know. There shouldn’t be. … shouldn’t. Wasn’t? What was real? Was the sky real? Instead of climbing up, she flopped onto her back, arms falling limp at her sides, still with her eyes closed. Ah, see, the wind was dying down. She wanted to climb. She didn’t. Not by herself. Never by herself. She wasn’t by herself, though. Was she? Anxiety, familiar in a distant sense, pricked at the back of her mind, and she reached out, brushed at the familiar presences that surrounded her. Surrounded her now. Existed around her. Not surround. Few people approached her, but that was okay. No, it wasn’t. Yes, it was, because sometimes they seemed to hurt around her, and she didn’t like to see anyone in pain. Was it her who caused it? Was it them? She didn’t know. She didn’t want to see it either way. There were people around. That was enough. Where was Kassander? Again she reached out, sorting through the separate strands until she felt his familiar warmth. Here. He was here. She was safe. Safe from what? It didn’t matter. Did it? The moon may be the brightest light up in the sky, but Kassander was the brightest light, period. She didn’t need to climb, when she had him.

As you can imagine, this works great within the dog eat dog world of Heuco Mundo.
