Embers // Afterlife Fantasy

Welcome to the first day of your new life. Embers is an afterlife fantasy cyberpunk RPG, running since 2006, first under the name War Chain, and then under the name Tamashii no Chikai, originally as a Bleach RP. Some Bleach influence still remains, but it is all presented differently and features new elements. The recent 2016 reboot under the name Embers follows a very similar standard and focus that War Chain and Tamashii no Chikai did, and we hope Embers will grow into its own free of its fandom ties. Here's to 157,000 more posts!
Mature themes, half the board is gay. Not recommended for bigots or individuals under 16 years of age. You must be 18 or older to gain access to the mature boards.

"...Thanks for the reminder." Sandalio's tone was awfully dry. "...But I knew that." That death wasn't really the worst thing. It was, however, nice to pretend. And it was also nice not to scare Alasdair into thinking maybe it really would be better to hide in this hole in a rock for a while longer.

"... Crassus is still around?" Alasdair's tone was full of disdain. Someone needed to bury that guy, honestly. And it was kind of a shame he hadn't been buried yet, because that meant they really did have to worry about dealing with him at this point.

"Unfortunately." Sandalio admitted. "We haven't managed to be rid of that particular one yet." Not for lack of trying, mind. But that was just the way things had gone, in the end.

Lovely - not that he'd expected Sahura to be wrong about that. And then, of course a saddened expression crossed Daren's face at that. Oh, missing two of them. One dead, the other missing. But the twins were around, and Thetis was around. And that was enough, really, he could live with that. It was more than he ever expected to see again.

"...The flying things?"
"The dragons." Sandalio supplied.
Alasdair stared for a moment. "... Right. Of course." Toned like he had no idea what to make of that statement, and also realized that he probably didn't want to know. At least not yet.

Anyway, they weren't going to get anywhere with him just sitting back here. That in mind, Alasdair picked himself up and moved towards Sahura and Sandalio. Ahhh right, okay he did indeed still have a bit of a headache, but that was fine. It wasn't as bad as it had been a few days ago, at least.

He was nervous, actually. But also excited. It was ... probably not such an odd mixture of emotion, really, given how long it had been. But it was okay, he was going home, so to speak, and what little was left of his family was already there and at least most of them together.

Was it congratulations? Because at the moment he had a headache and generally just wanted to stay hidden in his safe little hole for a while longer. But apparently he'd been found and that made him extremely nervous for the simple fact that he was not feeling his strongest at the moment. Mistrust kept his gaze locked on the pair and just slightly narrowed.

Even when they identified themselves with names he knew, Alasdair didn't relax. Anyone could make claims, anyone could use names that weren't theirs to use. It had been a while, but this one really was familiar. Maybe... they weren't lying. Some of the tension slid out of him, but only some of it, and he didn't go any closer.

"Yes, I'm here." Dryly. "I was hiding quite deliberately, actually." But of course Sahura didn't like that. No one had actually asked Sahura whether he liked it or not, but on the other hand, Alasdair had usually respected his opinions before.  "It's been a very long time, Sahura. Would it be so bad for me to stay here?"

"Depends on your definition of bad. Thetis misses you. The twins miss you." Sandalio offered in a mild tone. He shrugged. "You're sane, it's safe for you to come home." And maybe he should. At least then this silly trip to Sheol would have been worth something after all.

Alasdair wasn't sure he believed the Spaniard, though his fellow ex-slave had no reason to lie to him, particularly. The thought of Thetis missing him for this long was foreign - it didn't feel possible. Surely she'd moved on, found someone better. Surely the boys had all but forgotten about him by now. "...Right." Toned like he wasn't entirely sure he believed it.

It wasn't like they'd been together all that long, so it was hard for him to imagine that he'd made that much of an impression on them. ... Granted, he realized dimly, he did miss Thetis a great deal.  And the boys, even the ones that weren't his by blood.

"...Do I even want to know what year it is?" It was a slightly different question, but man, what were they wearing. ... The thing that the Valkyrie wore, of course. But it certainly led him to wonder just how long he'd been here for.

Alasdair is the somewhat fractured remnant of a gladiator turned rebel from a long, long time ago. His memories are somewhat sparse, but coming back to him as the days go by and he gains strength. He spent most of the last two thousand years as a Seeker - and for a good deal of that time, as multiple different people. It is only within the last few weeks that he has had his mask broken and his mind returned to him.

In the time since regaining his memory he has also regained some of his confidence. And as an Diablo who has lived for so long as a Seeker he is cautious of those who are extremely powerful - but he has quite a bit of strength in his own right and is more likely to react with caution than outright fear. In life Alasdair had few fears and as a gladiator he learned not to show them if he had any choice in the matter.

Time may have dulled the memories, may have taken some of the names of his friends (and enemies) from him, but it has not worn away the person those memories made him. In time he has gained control over the hatred, grief and other negative emotions which fueled his transformation into a Seeker, and he has learned to harness them as a weapon. In doing so, he has regained his sense of morality along with his loyalty to those he considers to be his friends.

Friends
It'll take time for the last of Alasdair's skittishness to wear off enough for him to make friends beyond those of Metella's army - whom he's already familiar with. But anyone who was a Rebellion member is likely considered a friend, and anyone introduced to him by one of the old rebellion members is likely to get a slight leg up in befriending him. Beyond that, just a little bit of patience will go a long way because Alasdair isn't unfriendly he just doesn't open up particularly easy so getting beyond the surface will take time.

Enemies
Anyone who hurts those he considers to be his friend or his family are his enemies. Anyone from old Rome who wasn't a member of the Rebellion is probably his enemy too, realistically. Those who deliberately harm innocent people will find themselves faced with the sharper edge of Alasdair's temper.

Lovers
Alasdair is still very much in love with Thetis, whom he credits as the first person to make him feel like a person again after way too long of how Romans treated their slaves. She was also the first he trusted with his real name, which spiraled from there until everyone was using it. ... The point is, two thousand years later, and he still loves the tiny Greek woman who saw a gladiator in the market and decided to bring him home, so the chances of anyone but her getting very far with him are slim.
